Form 1099-R - Entering Basis of Nonqualified Distributions

Follow the instructions to report the basis of your nonqualified Roth IRA distributions, for Line 19 of Form 8606 Nondeductible IRAs to calculate properly, and for Line 4b of Form 1040 to show the correct amount as taxable.

To report basis of nonqualified distributions from Form 1099-R in the TaxAct program (if you need help accessing Form 1099-R in the TaxAct program, go to our Form 1099-R - Entering Distributions from Retirement Plans FAQ):

  1. From within your Form 1099-R, continue with the interview process until you reach the screen titled Retirement Plan Income - Distribution Amount.
  2. Type the amounts in the data entry fields below Box 1 - Gross distribution and Box 2a - Taxable amount, and click the checkbox next to Box 2b - Taxable amount not determined.
  3. Scroll down to the Box 7 section, click the dropdown below Box 7 - Distribution code, and click the applicable code. If you need to select another distribution code, click the dropdown below Box 7 - Distribution code (if necessary), and click the applicable code.
  4. On the screen titled Roth IRA Distributions - Basis, click the data entry field below Basis in Roth IRA contributions, and type the amount.

Note. The screen titled Roth IRA Distributions - Basis will only appear if the correct codes were selected. If the screen doesn't appear, go back and make the correct selections.
