Michigan - City Tax Return - Preparation and Filing

TaxACT supports Michigan city tax returns.

The Common Form, CF-1040, is accepted by 19 cities: Albion, Battle Creek, Big Rapids, Flint, Grand Rapids, Grayling, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Ionia, Jackson, Lansing, Lapeer, Muskegon, Muskegon Heights, Pontiac, Portland, Saginaw, Springfield, and Walker.

The Detroit resident city tax return is completed on Form D-1040(R). The Detroit nonresident city tax return is completed on Form D-1040(NR).

To complete the Michigan city tax return:
  1. From within your TaxACT return (Online or Desktop), click on the State Q&A tab
  2. Click Michigan directly below the blue tabs
  3. Click Michigan City Topics to expand the category, and then click Common Form Topics, Detroit Resident Income Tax Topics, or Detroit Nonresident Income Tax Topics
  4. Select Main Interview
  5. The program will proceed with the interview questions for you to enter the appropriate information.
The following cities accept electronically filed TaxACT returns:

If your city return must be paper filed, the Common Form CF-1040, Detroit Form D-1040(R) or D-1040(NR) will print along with your Michigan state return during the filing steps. You would then paper file the form using the mailing address appearing at the bottom of the first page of the form.
