How to Amend a State Tax Return in TaxAct

If you need to make changes to a state tax return that you’ve already filed, you can use TaxAct to prepare and file an amended return.

Steps to Amend a Prior-Year State Tax Return:

  1. Identify the Changes
Determine the specific updates or corrections needed for your original return.

  2. Access the Filed Return
Obtain a copy of the original return. You can retrieve it from:

  3. Sign in to your TaxAct account

    • Go to your account and click the My Tax Returns tile.
    • Find the relevant state return, then click Open Return in the Actions column.
  4. Re-Enter Return Information
Restart the return process, updating or correcting the relevant information.

Note: If you’ve already amended your federal return, those changes may automatically carry over to the state return.

  5. Navigate to the State Return

    • Online Version: Click the State drop-down on the left, then select the relevant state.
    • Desktop Version: Click the State tab, then choose the applicable state.
  6. Select "Amended Return" Option
On the state return screen, click Amended Return.

If you don’t see this option, expand the Miscellaneous Topics menu.

  7. Print and Mail the Amended Return

    • Most states require amended returns to be paper filed.
    • At the end of the amendment process, you will typically be prompted to print the amended form and receive the appropriate mailing address.
    • If not prompted, click Filing > Mail Paper Return, then follow the instructions to print and mail your amended return.

Important Notes:

  • Amended state returns for prior years must be mailed—they cannot be e-filed.
  • Make sure to include any supporting documents (e.g., corrected W-2s, 1099s) as required by your state.
