Virginia - Code 106 Long-Term Premiums
1

If you are not seeing code "106" (long-term premiums) as a selection in the Virginia program, it is likely because first the long-term premiums must be entered in the Federal program, under Itemized Deductions (not to be calculated and taken on the Federal return, only to let code "106" appear on the Virginia return). Once that information is entered, you will see the code as a selection on the Virginia return.

To enter the long-term premiums:

  1. From within your TaxAct return (Online or Desktop), click Federal. On smaller devices, click in the upper left-hand corner, then click Federal.
  2. Click Itemized or Standard Deductions in the Federal Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click Medical and dental expenses.
  3. Continue with the interview process to enter all of the appropriate information.
  4. On the screen titled Enter long-term care premiums paid during 2020, enter the qualified long-term care premiums, leave "None selected" in the Age of person drop-down (so the expense does not actually calculate on the Federal return), then click Continue.
  5. Click State on the left to expand, then click Virginia (or VA) (Desktop users, located under the Basic Info tab).
  6. Click Deductions in the Virginia Quick Q&A Topics menu to expand, then click Other Deductions.
  7. On the screen titled Virginia - Other Deductions, click Yes to view the screen titled Virginia - Deductions where the code number "106" and the Long-Term premium deduction amount will be displayed.

You would then also ignore the Yellow Alert "Warning: Insurance Premiums" when you run the Alerts which tells you to enter the age of the person for the Federal entry, because you do not want the deduction to be taken on the Federal Schedule A (Form 1040) Itemized Deductions.
