Reducing PDF File Size
1

There is a size limitation of 3 MB total for attachments in the TaxAct Online program (2 MB for the Desktop program). If the file is over the size limit, there are several options to reduce its size.

First, confirm how big file is.

On a PC:

    1. Open File Explorer.
    2. Right-click on the PDF file.
    3. Select “Properties.”
    4. Look at “File Size” to see how large the PDF is.

On a Mac:

    1. Open Finder.
    2. Right-click on the PDF file.
    3. Select “Get Info.”
    4. Look at “File Size” to see how large the PDF is.

Note: 1,000 kilobytes (KB) equals one megabyte (MB). So a document that is 25,000KB is 25MB.

How to make a .pdf file size smaller:

  • Open the PDF needing to be reduced, and then "print" the file to another PDF that is saved with a new name. This is often enough to reduce the file size to TaxAct's upper limit. However, if the file is still too large:
    • Consider using the free file compressor online at Adobe Online Services
    • Adobe also offers a free online Split PDF tool as well, that will allow you to parse a document and remove any un-needed pages in a PDF file.
