Schedules C and F - Standard Mileage Rate for Vehicles

Per the IRS webpage:

"Beginning on Jan. 1, 2024, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:

  • 67 cents per mile driven for business use, up 1.5 cents from 2023.
  • 21 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes for qualified active-duty members of the Armed Forces, a decrease of 1 cent from 2023.
  • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations; the rate is set by statute and remains unchanged from 2023.

These rates apply to electric and hybrid-electric automobiles as well as gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles."

To claim the standard mileage rate on Schedule C (Form 1040) Profit or Loss From Business (if you need help accessing Schedule C, go to our Schedule C - Entering Sole Proprietorship in Program FAQ):

  1. From within your Schedule C, continue with the interview process until you reach the screen titled Great! Let's get started on expenses, then click Enter expenses.
  2. On the screen titled Would you like to review vehicle expenses for [business] activities related to [business]?, click Yes.
  3. On the screen titled Vehicles - Actual or Standard, click Standard mileage rate, and continue with the interview process to enter your information.

To claim the standard mileage rate on Schedule F (Form 1040) Profit or Loss from Farming (if you need help accessing Schedule F, go to our Schedule F - Entering Depreciation in Program FAQ):

  1. From within your Schedule F, continue with the interview process until you reach the screen titled Farm Income - Expenses, then click Yes.
  2. On the screen titled Farm Income - Vehicle Expenses, click Yes.
  3. On the screen titled Vehicles - Actual or Standard, click Standard mileage rate, and continue with the interview process to enter your information.
