Frequently Asked Questions
MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets a supported app (Claude Desktop) connect to tools TaxAct hosts so Claude can retrieve TaxAct- and IRS-grounded information when you ask tax questions. Uses include comparing filing costs, simple bracket-based estimates, document guidance, and exploring tax topics, with no TaxAct account required.
No. TaxAct states you can explore this experience without a TaxAct account. If you later file or use paid TaxAct services, those flows use standard Services and account tools under the Terms of Service.
No. The MCP experience helps you compare options, estimate, plan documents, and learn. It does not replace TaxAct's full preparation, review, and e-file workflow. Preparing and filing happens through TaxAct tax preparation software and Services under the Terms of Service.
TaxAct's MCP page explains the connector is not connected to your TaxAct or other personal financial accounts and is available without sharing sensitive personal or tax information. Avoid entering SSNs, full tax documents, bank credentials, or similar into any AI chat unless you follow a documented secure path (e.g., direct support with a representative as described in the Terms for certain Services).
For the TaxAct MCP Server experience, TaxAct states on the product page that TaxAct does not save or use your data to train models. Conversations run in Claude, subject to Anthropic's policies. For how TaxAct handles personal information across broader Services, see the Privacy Notice (generative AI and interactive features where applicable).
The MCP page indicates responses come from trusted published sources like TaxAct and the IRS. The Terms of Service state: TAXACT DOES NOT PROVIDE TAX ADVICE. Response are provided for informational purposes; consult your own professional tax advisors. Terms also note AI-style features are for general information only, may not be reviewed for accuracy, and may have limitations. Estimator tools are a convenience; you retain ultimate responsibility for accuracy and completeness of what you file.
The MCP experience supports current-season planning and education using published TaxAct and IRS materials. Tax law and product pricing change; confirm details in up-to-date IRS guidance and in TaxAct when you prepare your return.
The MCP server is for conversational help inside Claude Desktop via the connector (https://mcp.taxact.com/mcp). The website and apps are where you sign in when applicable, enter tax information, and file. MCP is not a substitute for those filing workflows.
TaxAct describes setup in Claude Desktop: Settings, Connectors, Add custom connector, Name: TaxAct, URL: mcp.taxact.com/mcp. Use Claude Desktop for the supported experience unless TaxAct lists others.
Add: Claude Desktop, Settings, Connectors, Add custom connector, enter TaxAct and https://mcp.taxact.com/mcp, then Add. Remove: delete or disconnect the connector in Connectors settings. That controls the Claude-TaxAct MCP link; it does not by itself change data in a TaxAct account.
Check network and Claude Desktop updates. You can still use taxact.com for filing and account needs. TaxAct does not control third-party products such as external AI platforms and is not liable for their content, accuracy, or functionality (Third Party Offerings). For support for TaxAct’s products, please refer to https://www.taxact.com/terms-of-service
The MCP connector is described as a way to get information to help with your tax return preparation without a TaxAct account. Claude or other software may have its own subscription terms. Paid TaxAct filing products are priced separately when you purchase.
Terms restrict use of standard consumer TaxAct software for commercial purposes unless you have a Professional license as described there. Treat AI output as informational, not a substitute for professional judgment, firm policies, and law; avoid inputting client personal information in third-party AI unless permitted. TaxAct does not provide tax advice through its Services.
For TaxAct accounts and Services, see the Security page: password rules, MFA, trusted device verification, and work with IRS and state authorities. No internet transmission is completely secure; more detail at taxact.com/security. The MCP is not connected to your TaxAct account; account controls apply when you use Services with a TaxAct account.
TaxAct’s Privacy Notice explains how TaxAct collects, uses, and protects personal information across its services. The GLBA Notice describes handling of personal information for customers in scope. TaxAct’s Terms govern use of Services, including that TaxAct is not giving tax advice and that its Services are provided AS IS without warranties. The MCP page adds connector-specific information.
